All right, if you can all listen up for a couple minutes, I've got some things you might be interested in hearing about--and I'm gonna need your input on them.

Since it sounded like people'd be interested in the possibility of having a nightclub here, we're gonna try putting something together on the second floor of Seventh Heaven. Dining, dancing, live music, the works. Opening night'll be sometime at the beginning of August, if everything goes according to plan.

What that means, though, is that we're gonna need some entertainment, and that's where you come in. If you're a musician and you've been wanting an audience, then you could have a regular gig here--any style music. I'm partial to pop, of course, but I get the feeling not everyone here likes Perry Como. Or maybe if you do standup--that could be okay, too. I don't want it turning into a whole vaudeville circuit up there, but if you're some other kind of entertainer, let me know, and we'll see if we can't fit you in somewhere.

So if you're interested, let me know here. Tell me what it you do, whether you're going to need anything there to perform, like if you play the piano, and how often we could count on you to be the evening's entertainment.

And if I haven't lost you all completely yet, if anyone's got an idea for a name for the place, I'm all ears. I name characters--turns out I'm no good at naming nightclubs.

[And with that task done, she's going to go celebrate this project getting off the ground--along with finally getting all her finished manuscripts in something approaching order that afternoon--with a trip out to Good Spirits. Can't neglect one part of Luceti's nightlife ("nightlife") for the other, after all. She'll be there for an hour or two, in a yellow cocktail dress, because it's just not fun to go out if you don't get a little dressed up.]

[Well, only Englishmen with too much time on their hands write about good upstanding sailors. They're fun stories to read, but Kay can't imagine actually writing about Hornblower and his crew.]

Yeah? [And she looks at the book with some interest as Buffy flips through it.] Well, your book'll tell you better'n I could. I usually just eyeball it when I'm at home. [And let's be honest, it never comes out as good as when someone else makes it. There's a reason she doesn't usually make drinks more complicated than "pour brandy into a glass and serve."]

[ she sets to work once the appropriate recipe has been found. and then picks up the previous conversation thread: ] Someone's been telling you pirate stories, huh?

Oh, I haven't heard too many here. Met a pirate or two, and that's about it.

[ despite it being a new drink, buffy tosses it together with a casual ease. she's had lots of practice at this job. ]

I guess there are a few hanging around this town.

I've only met the one, but I haven't managed to rub elbows with everyone here yet. [And after Kay takes a sip of the drink, she smiles. Buffy here's a quality bartender, that's for sure.]

I tend a bar and a bar has rum. Ergo? I know him.

True. Seems like he can be downright unavoidable sometimes, anyway.

He's got a knack for always showing up, that's true. Especially if there's some advantage to be had.

Or a sandwich.

...Oh God. Don't tell me you made him one?

He showed up at my study window covered in mud. There wasn't much I could do at that point.

You send him away, that's what. Throw something at him.

Lord, I'd never have heard the end of it. The man knows how to make a nuisance of himself.

Pretty sure it's a point of pride for him, in fact.

Probably should be--he's damned good at it. That's the last time I cook for him, though. [Sip. Hope to God that's actually true.]

...I made the mistake of prepping tacos for him, over a year ago. Haven't been able to get rid of him since. Except -- [ oh. a frown. ] He was gone, for a bit.

Yeah--the sandwich thing was right after he came back. Could barely remember my name, but he remembered my cooking.

...So his priorities are a little on the ill-advised side, too.

I wouldn't remember me for my cooking, I can tell you that much.

...It's not my strongest suit, either. I don't think he cares. I'm starting to suspect that it's not the taste but the actual cooking that tickles him pink.

[ ...she's only stumbling upon this theory now. ]

Well, that'd explain a lot. I mean, I know how to cook, but I could go stand out in the middle of a busy road, and it'd be about as much fun. [Sigh. Jack, you're driving her to drink.] And yet I've made him dinner twice now.

Want me to put a good word in? The kinds of words that involve things like "leave" and "the nice lady" and "alone"?
