You know what this place could use? A nightclub.

Don't get me wrong, I like Good Spirits a lot, but you can't exactly go there for dinner and dancing. The pizzeria seems like it has room for musicians, but pizza's not exactly ritzy. Sometimes you just want to go somewhere nice and hear a good band, you know? Putting a Tex Beneke record on just isn't the same.

It wouldn't even have to be dance music all the time, either. Just some piano music, like--oh, what's his name--Chopin plays would be nice. We probably don't have enough musicians here to make a full-sized band anyway.

I'm not asking for the Stork Club here--Lord knows I wouldn't get in if I was--but there oughta be something else to do here at night. For the most part, this place is great, but it's kind of a one-horse town when it comes to entertainment.

[Kay looks over, a bit of a smile on her face--he's been all over that recliner for days now, but with a bum leg, she can hardly blame him--and shrugs.]

Balls're a little fancier than I've got in mind. More like...I don't know, do you have dinner and dancing where you're from?

Yeah, we got soirees, but I seriously don't go looking for 'em.

Really? They're not too bad, if you have someone to go with.

[Mildmay is tempted to just stare at her in a way that highlights his scar, but that seems sort of a dick move when she's been pretty nice to him lately.]

The ones I been to, I wasn't exactly invited. [He shrugs.] It's a flash thing. Don't sound like what you were talking about, though.

Well, the Stork Club'd count as 'flash,' I bet. [But here, she'll say something a little less dryly.] I dunno, where you lived, when people who weren't flash wanted to go out for the evening, what'd they do?

Dunno. Go to the Cockatrice, or the Hopeless. Bars or plays, depending on what you're after.

They ever have musicians at the bars?

Sometimes, but you didn't dance, and if you had more than a handful of wit, you wouldn't pay 'em no mind.

Well, same kind of thing, except the music's good and no one thinks anything of it if you dance. It's not too formal, just a little...dressy, I guess.

[Probably Mildmay should throw this poor woman a bone. He shrugs.] Sounds nice, I guess.

[She'll survive if it turns out you don't want to come to her daaaaaance, Mildmay, don't worry.] It is. Sometimes it's nice just to get out for a while.

[...This is lost entirely on Mildmay.] Guess so. They got a lotta places like this, in New York?

They've got a lot of everything in New York. Plenty of clubs for all kinds of people. [But those don't really seem to be Mildmay's speed, let's be honest here.] Plenty of bars like you have, too.

Huh. Sounds nice. [...A pause, and then:] Why's it called The Stork?

You know, I don't know. They started it years ago--I've never actually been inside, but it shows up sometimes in the news. [Mostly as a look into the lifestyles of the rich and famous, which Kay doesn't find scintillating enough to read endlessly on, so they've just about exhausted her knowledge of the place.]

Huh. It really that big've a deal?

It's not exactly the Mirador, I guess, but seems like everyone who's anyone goes there. And people like hearing about celebrities--well, some people do.

Oh, I heard the gossip, I know. [Mildmay gives the concept a dismissive wave that he, were he in a more self-aware mood, would be horrified to realize was stolen wholesale from Felix.] Folks love that shit. Seems strange there ain't nothing like it here.

You would, wouldn't you? Not gossip magazines, exactly--no one here's really famous enough. But some idea of who's top cat. Maybe people come and go too much for that.

Maybe. I'm thinking it's too small. Smallest damn place I ever lived, and I ain't talking about the rooms.

Same here. It's kind of eerie sometimes, isn't it? Too many trees, not enough people. [Too many bunnies, not enough mittens.]

Yeah. I mean, I knew folk who were from bumfuck nowhere, and there ain't nothing wrong with 'em, but... you can always tell.

While they're still new to the city, at least. If they settle in all right... [Shrug. But Kay's a transplant, and while Indianapolis isn't tiny, New York was literally nineteen times its size when she moved there. So, uh, her opinion doesn't really count here.]

Yeah, there's that. I dunno. I reckon my city's different than yours.

I think you're probably right. It's too bad we can't visit 'em both--I bet everything'd be a lot clearer.
