You know what this place could use? A nightclub.

Don't get me wrong, I like Good Spirits a lot, but you can't exactly go there for dinner and dancing. The pizzeria seems like it has room for musicians, but pizza's not exactly ritzy. Sometimes you just want to go somewhere nice and hear a good band, you know? Putting a Tex Beneke record on just isn't the same.

It wouldn't even have to be dance music all the time, either. Just some piano music, like--oh, what's his name--Chopin plays would be nice. We probably don't have enough musicians here to make a full-sized band anyway.

I'm not asking for the Stork Club here--Lord knows I wouldn't get in if I was--but there oughta be something else to do here at night. For the most part, this place is great, but it's kind of a one-horse town when it comes to entertainment.

Well, we'd have a rhythm section, anyway. [Guitars front and center? That'd never work.]

I wonder how hard it'd be to remodel one of the houses... I've never seen the interiors, but if they're anything like the apartments, you'd have to knock out a wall or two if you wanted a dance floor and tables.

...Depends on the music. Kind of guitar I play does most of the work, along with a strong vocalist. I'm thinking you're tending more towards instrumental band, though.

Dunno, but yeah, you'd either have to remodel or build a new place. Other options I guess would be to take over the rec center or the barracks, but I think people still use them for other things.

Well, if it's something you can dance to, I'm not picky. [She's got a fairly specific kind of dancing in mind, of course, but at least in theory, all dance music is welcome.]

And I'm not exactly cut out for interior design. Or barn-raising, for that matter.

Probably a matter of opinion if you can dance to it.

Can probably find help for the second.

[And she thinks back to the cacophony that was the New Feather welcome two months ago.] Yeah, I guess it might be. But you like it, I'm not about to tell you different.

Probably. Sounds like putting something together at Seventh Heaven might be the quicker route, though.

Might be the way to go. People might be more likely to come, too, if they can combine their entertainment.

Out of curiosity, what sort of bands were you looking for?

Yeah, one stop for a good time.

Ideally, a big band, but a smaller jazz combo would do in a pinch. The kind of jazz you can dance to--that bebop's nice, but I'll be damned if you can do much more than listen. But beggars can't be choosers, especially in a small town.

Oh, you can dance to it. Just not ballroom dancing or jazz steps...although that can get you by if you;re willing to improvise.

Might want to try a variety of stuff; so many different places represented means a more varied audience. Maybe have theme nights.

Well, improvising's half of dancing, far as I can tell. And theme nights aren't a bad idea--when there's only one club in town, you can't really afford to let it get stuck in a rut.

I'm Kay, by the way. Don't think I caught your name.

Derek Bliss. Nice to meet you, Kay.

Nice to meet you, too. So if I called you up with a gig one of these days, would you be interested?

[ voice]

[identity profile] derek-bliss.livejournal.com 2011-07-06 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
...Yeah, sure. I do mostly rock and blues, but I can fake it for jazz and stuff.

...what year are you from? [So that he can explain based on what she would know.]

Nineteen fifty-three. [Which means she's a few months away from "rock 'n' roll" showing up in print. Have fun, Derek.]

...You'll love Elvis when he starts up.

[Or maybe not.]

Rock is what come country develops into later. It's noisy, fast, and catchy if you decide you like it. Well, most of it.

'Country'?

...You mean hillbilly music?

[Calling it something a little less pejorative should probably happen in about six years. So, uh. Yeah.]

Something like. Mixed with a few other styles as well.
